Theme
One of the major themes in this book, I believe, is "People are not always what they seem." In the story pretty much everyone one of the characters are seen differently than they actually are. People tend to hide their true selves because of the fear that they'd be judge or criticized by others. Alex in the beginning believes that Brittany is a stuck up rich girl but in all actuality she's wasn't any of those things. Brittany was afraid to show herself to people because she didn't want to destroy her "perfect" image.
Another theme that is important theme in this book is "Family is forever." In the story both Brittany and Alex are strongly connected with their families. They look out for them and always stand by their sides not matter what. Friends will grow apart and leave, but your families are going to be there forever. Alex protects his brother as if they were his own kids because they don't have a father, and their mom is always working. Brittany takes care of her disabled sister and tries to make sure her parents don't send her away.
